artsucide – xiii – strapped
The next day when I awoke, she was sitting on the side of my bed again.
„Good morning, Morris, did you sleep well?“
“Not too bad” I answered.
“You’re still strapped to the bed, better untie you now, you’ll be wanting to go to the loo too.!
She unstrapped him and made him put on a dressing gown whilst she changed the bed clothes, then she washed him at the small basin in the corner, have him lay down again, and disappeared, coming back with a tray with tea and toast which was on a trolley ouside the door.
„That’s better, isn’t it.“ She said.
“Sorry I wet the bed,“ I said, ashamed.
“That’s not so bad Morris, you were strapped down anyway and couldn’t have gone to the toilet yourself.”
He took a piece of toast with jam, he wasn’t used to having breakfast though.
„How are you feeling, you wont have to be strapped down anymore, it’s more comfortable.“ She said.
„Why was I strapped down?“ I asked.
„Mmm, we thought you might try to hurt yourself or run away,“ she said.
„Have you done anything like that before, Morris?“
„What?“ I said.
„Tried to, well, die, or get yourself killed?“
„No.“
There was a short pause, I drunk some tea.
„Morris, a doctor will come by later to ask you some questions” she said.
“What about?” I asked.
“About your little journey to the slaughterhouse and your letter.”
“Okay.” I said.
I took the second piece of toast.
„Why did you want to die, Morris?“ she asked, looking at him sadly.
He thought about the question, then said:
„Because I don’t like how I feel, living here, being who I am, what I am, it’s not worth it, it hurts too much.“
„What?“
“Everything, just being alive, it hurts too much.“ I said.
„You mean, people hit you…?“ she asked.
„No, that’s not that bad, I’ve got used to it, I mean…just being here, on the earth, with all these people and things and thoughts and feelings.“ I said.
„And where would you rather be?“ she asked.
I looked up and smiled: „On the moon.“ I said.
„On the moon, what would you do there?“
„Nothing.“ I said.
